Halo: The Master Chief Collection – How to Play HTMCC
Basically, there exist a few different orders to play the game in terms of campaign. They include;
First, Release order which is CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach which is probably the best order to play if you want to experience the games fresh. Another one is the order in MCC which is Reach, CE, 2, 3, ODST.
The Reach is a prequel to CE. It fits with the narrative about same as Rogue One fit with Star Wars. In the sense that you’re following a different cast of Characters through part of the “Story so Far”. Blurb from CE’s manual, just like Rogue One is following the opening crawl to New Hope.
Also, you play Defiantly first. It provides a good introduction to the Covenant and since it is the final game, the covenant has their full roster of units in-game.
In this game, the only other order will be the chronological order which is Reach, CE, 2, ODST, 3. As for ODST which is a side story that takes place simultaneously with the second half of 2 in the same game engine as 3. It is better to play this on its own once you finish the main trilogy. This is why you need go into 3 after 2 and not break up the games since 2 ends on a cliff hanger that leads into 3.
Play CE on original Graphics because most of the changes in the anniversary graphics are detrimental to the game. Some levels look better in the new graphics but devoid of the point of the original design.
Concluding
Halo 2 on Anniversary is much better, but there is reason to do it either way. In both games you can change between old and new graphics mid game but the newer graphics for H2 is better since the new cutscenes are incredible.
Halo CE and Halo 2 Anniversary have terminals (Easter egg videos) in the newer graphics. You can ignore these on a first play through since many contain spoilers for later in the game.
Normally, 4 is not included in any order but it is meant to be played sometime after the OT. However, you may like it as the fan base seems to split on that one.
